Ditch those name-brand potato chips once and for all 🚫 You, yes YOU can make crunchy and delicious potato chips in any flavor at home, for a fraction of the price you’ll pay at a supermarket 👍🏼 In this post, I’ll show you exactly how to make homemade potato chips, in no time at all!
Golden brown and delicious 🤤 Make your all-time favorite potato chips, or come up with your own flavors! No matter what flavor you decide on, making your own chips will save you big money (read on to find out exactly how much)!
One of my go-to side dishes for sandwiches, burgers, or hot dogs are these homemade potato chips. While these chips are a perfect side dish to many meals, they also stand alone as the perfect party snack or even a little something to cure those mid-day munchies 😋
How Much Money Can I Save by Making Potato Chips?
By making your own potato chips at home, you can save approximately $4.46 (seasonings not included) per pound of chips 🤯 and the best part is, the more chips you make, the more money you will save 💰.
The savings will add up because you can reuse the oil multiple times. All you have to do is buy the oil once and use it to make several batches of potato chips. The only ingredients you need to purchase each time are the potatoes and whatever seasonings you’d like to use. You can save even more money by buying the potatoes in bulk.
The Math Behind the Savings (Seasonings Not Included)
Canola oil ($1.29 per cup)
Potatoes ($0.35 per potato, when purchased as a 5lb bag) x 2 = $0.70
Total $1.99 (per pound)
According to the Federal Reserve, the average price of a 16oz bag of potato chips in November 2023 was $6.45. That’s an increase of $1.86 over a 5-year period.
$6.45 (average chip price) – $1.99 (cost to make chips) = $4.46 (total savings)
Ideas for Homemade Potato Chips
My personal favorite is the all-time classic, plain salted chip, and I’m using the term plain loosely. When you make your own chips at home, there is nothing plain about them. They somehow, just taste better!
Whether you enjoy the classics like sour cream and onion, or you’re a little more adventurous and want to make your own flavor combinations, the possibilities are only limited by the imagination.
For some flavor ideas, check out the chart below. All you have to do is combine the ingredients in the chart and sprinkle the mixture over the chips, immediately after they are cooked, and voila 👍🏼
